This beginner guide starts with a live Immich server setup on a computer the speaker accesses over SSH. They fetch the installation files from the documentation, start the server with one command, then create an administrator account through the web interface. The demonstration continues with an upload of presentation slides and an album that the speaker uses for the talk.
Immich is presented as an open source, self-hosted photo and video manager with iOS and Android apps. Onboarding includes controls for services that contact the internet: hosted map tiles, a GitHub version check and Google Cast. The speaker also stresses 3-2-1 backups because users take responsibility for their own photo storage.
The feature overview covers OCR for finding text in images, locked photos, casting and reversible editing. The speaker explains how community requests led to external library support for people who already had organized photo collections. They attribute much of the project's success to its mobile apps and familiar interface.
Future plans include easier installation and integrated backup services, including encrypted backups to a server at a friend's or family member's home. These remain goals in the talk. In the closing Nextcloud discussion, the speaker says Immich should stay focused on photos and videos rather than absorb a broader drive-style suite.
