Tolaria is a desktop app for a Markdown knowledge base. This overview explains its file format, installation and built-in MCP connection to Claude Code, then compares it with Obsidian and Notion. The supplied metadata identifies the project as open source under AGPL-3.0.

Each note is a Markdown file with YAML frontmatter, and the vault is an ordinary folder. The speaker describes Git for sync and version control, alongside a block editor with slash commands, wikilinks and image drag and drop. Other text editors and terminal tools can work with the same files. The metadata describes the app as offline-first and requiring no account.

The installation section covers macOS and Linux, including AMD64 and ARM Linux builds. Tolaria uses Tauri with Rust, React and TypeScript. The speaker attributes its small footprint to the system web view, though the video supplies no benchmark to substantiate the startup and memory claims.

The MCP server gives an AI agent access to read, search and edit the vault. Claude Code examples include summarizing notes on a topic, drafting from linked references and revising a note while preserving wikilinks. This is access to local notes; the source does not establish that model inference runs locally.

The speaker favors Tolaria's built-in integration over Obsidian's community plugins but notes its lower maturity and fewer plugins. The advice is to keep a deeply customized Obsidian vault if it already suits the user.
