Trilium Notes is a local-first note-taking app for people building a large personal knowledge base. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, or on your own server through Docker, with browser access and a mobile web interface. It's free and open source under AGPL-3.0.
Trilium includes full-size and sidebar LLM chat. You can connect Ollama, LM Studio or another OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or use a cloud provider. Chat tools can alter notes and create scripts. Local notes stay in your own database, but a cloud model receives the content you send to it.
Its organization goes beyond nested folders: the same note can appear in multiple branches of an arbitrarily deep tree. Full-text search helps you find material across the collection, while note attributes let you organize and query notes by structured information. Note history preserves earlier versions, and per-note encryption lets you protect selected content.
The editor supports formatted text with tables, images and math, plus Markdown autoformatting. Code notes have syntax highlighting. For visual work, Excalidraw powers canvas notes, Mind Elixir powers mind maps, and relation maps show connections between notes. Geographic notes can contain location pins and GPX tracks.
