Obsidian Local GPT

An open-source Obsidian AI plugin that works with local Ollama models or OpenAI-compatible services and draws context from linked notes and PDFs.

Obsidian Local GPT brings AI writing assistance into Obsidian, with local Ollama models for private, offline use or connections to OpenAI-compatible services. It's for people who want help with their notes while keeping control over where the AI runs. The plugin is open source under the MIT license.

Its built-in actions continue a draft, summarize selected text, correct spelling and grammar, and extract action items. You can also use a selection as a general prompt. Actions are available through a text context menu, while an Action Palette handles one-off requests without leaving Obsidian.

The assistant can draw context from linked notes, backlinks and PDF files, so a request can use related material beyond the selected passage. It also works with images when paired with a model that supports them. For retrieving relevant text, it supports embedding models such as nomic-embed-text and bge-m3.

Custom prompts and system prompts let you create actions for your own writing tasks. Community actions are available within the plugin and update automatically; editing an action's prompt preserves your changes by stopping those updates.

Provider connections depend on the separate Obsidian AI Providers plugin. With a local Ollama backend, AI processing stays on your machine and can work offline. Choosing a remote service sends the material used for a request to that provider.
