Microsoft Copilot alternatives for chat and files

Compare LibreChat, Open WebUI and Cherry Studio for chat and file analysis, plus GPTLocalhost for AI inside Word documents.

Microsoft Copilot answers questions, helps with writing and analyzes material in chat. Microsoft also connects Copilot to work in its productivity apps, so replacing the conversational assistant and replacing that app integration are separate decisions. The tools below concentrate on chat, files and a few clearly scoped document workflows.

LibreChat and Open WebUI offer shared chat workspaces with file tasks and connected tools. Cherry Studio provides desktop conversations with Office files and PDFs. Khoj adds document search and web research, while GPTLocalhost brings model-backed work into Word itself. Nextcloud Assistant covers documents, email and calendar in Nextcloud Hub; it does not reproduce Copilot inside Microsoft 365.

Self-hosted office suite for collaborative document editing with local AI models. Free and open source under AGPL-3.0, with Docker, Linux and Windows support.

ONLYOFFICE Docs combines Office-format editing with AI summaries, rewriting and macro creation. Shared editing, comments and tracked changes support team review, with Ollama available through the configured AI plugin.

A self-hosted AI assistant for Nextcloud Hub handles documents, chat and calendar tasks with local models or cloud providers under AGPL-3.0.

Nextcloud Assistant summarizes mail and chat, rewrites documents and answers questions about files inside Nextcloud Hub. It suits teams moving their productivity workflow to Nextcloud, with the available AI tasks depending on configured providers.

92AGPL-3.0Web

A self-hosted AI assistant uses Ollama or cloud models to search documents and automate tasks, with native apps for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Screenshot of OpenAgent website

OpenAgent handles tasks that read or write Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and answer questions from uploaded business documents. It is an agent for working with those files; it does not provide the Office editing interface itself.

5.7KApache-2.0macOSWindowsLinuxWeb

An AI client for Microsoft Word that lets you use your choice of local or cloud language models.

Screenshot of GPTLocalhost website

GPTLocalhost connects Microsoft Word to a separate local model server or cloud provider. Document generation, translation and dialogue across documents make it relevant specifically to Copilot-in-Word work; it does not cover Excel or Outlook integration.

A self-hosted AI search and chat platform that connects company knowledge to employees and agents, with local model support and air-gapped deployment.

Screenshot of Onyx website

Onyx covers questions about company knowledge spread across workplace apps. Its search checks source permissions, and agents can turn findings into reports or downloadable documents. This is workplace search and research rather than editing inside Office.

A self-hosted AI chat platform connects local models and cloud APIs, with tool-using agents, conversation search and multi-user authentication.

Screenshot of LibreChat website

LibreChat covers multi-provider chat, uploaded-file work and assistants that execute code or use connected tools. It suits Copilot users who want one self-hosted conversation workspace, including teams sharing agents and controlling access.

46KMITWeb

An open-source desktop AI chat app for Windows, macOS and Linux that connects to local models through Ollama or LM Studio and to cloud providers.

Screenshot of Cherry Studio website

Cherry Studio offers desktop chat with text, images, Office files and PDFs, plus translation and MCP connections. It suits individual users who want conversations and file analysis without deploying a shared chat server.

A desktop AI assistant reads screen context on Windows and macOS, works with local models through Ollama, and uses MCP tools to carry out tasks.

Screenshot of Everywhere website

Everywhere uses the app on your screen as context for questions about reports, charts or errors. It can then work with files, browser tools or terminal scripts, making it useful for desktop assistance across apps rather than only an attached-file chat.

A self-hosted workplace AI platform searches connected business apps with source permissions and cited answers, using local models through Ollama or cloud APIs.

Screenshot of PipesHub website

PipesHub searches company knowledge across Microsoft 365 and other connected business systems while retaining source permissions. Answers include source links and highlighted evidence, and its agents can create reports or act across those tools.

3.8KApache-2.0DockerWeb

A self-hosted AI chat interface that works offline with local models and connects to Ollama, OpenAI-compatible APIs and cloud providers.

Screenshot of Open WebUI website

Open WebUI combines model chat, document context, notes and shared workspaces. Agents can analyze files or run scripts through a separately connected Open Terminal; it replaces the conversational and file-work side of Copilot.

A self-hostable AI assistant that searches documents and the web, supports local or online LLMs, and runs custom agents and scheduled automations.

Screenshot of Khoj website

Khoj searches your documents and the web, supports custom agents and schedules recurring research. It suits replacing Copilot questions that depend on personal files or outside information, with local or online model choices.

38KAGPL-3.0Web

An open-source AI data analysis workspace that runs locally in your browser or Docker, with Ollama support and editable charts. MIT licensed.

Screenshot of Data Formulator website

Data Formulator covers spreadsheet analysis with natural-language questions and editable charts. Its Data Thread keeps tables and explanations beside each result, with branches for alternative investigations. It is a separate analysis workspace rather than an Excel add-in.

A self-hosted AI data assistant that writes SQL, analyzes spreadsheets, and produces reports using privately deployed models or cloud APIs.

DB-GPT suits business analysis across databases, documents and spreadsheet files. Agents generate SQL or Python and produce charts, dashboards or reports. It handles the analysis in its own workspace rather than inside Microsoft 365 apps.

A self-hosted AI knowledge platform combines cited document Q&A, agent tasks and linked wiki pages, with Ollama inference and offline deployment support.

Screenshot of WeKnora website

WeKnora provides cited document answers and agent tasks in a team knowledge workspace. Scoped access, identity connections and audit logs govern that work; its documented source integrations include Confluence, GitLab, Notion and Feishu.

An AI email assistant for Thunderbird that drafts and organizes messages using local models through Ollama or LM Studio, or cloud services.

Screenshot of ThunderAI website

ThunderAI covers email drafting and inbox triage inside Thunderbird. It summarizes messages, suggests tags and applies classification rules, with reviewable proofreading for replies. It serves the mail workflow in Thunderbird rather than Outlook.
